Colour

 

A predominantly black saddle, shot through with silver, runs from neck to root of the tail. The long bushy tail is mostly blackish; head , flanks and legs reddish brown. Throat, chest and belly witish. In the west of the distribution area, males's winter coat develops a partculary rich, reddish colour.

Appearance

 

The side-striped jackal, but has longer ears and sharper muzzle. The side-striped jackal is never reddish, and lacks the black saddle.

Habitat

 

A wide range of habitats (excluding forests), particularydrier areas and open terrain.
